On Saturday night Kevin Mack and I cruised Elliott Island Road listening for black rails and were rewarded early in the evening @ 8:30 pm when we heard one calling close to the road, followed by another about 20 yards east, also close to the road. We spent about 30 minutes hoping they might show themselves in our flashlight beams but did not see them. The location was Elliott Island Road, several miles beyond the buff-colored house and about a mile short of the second small bridge. The road takes a sharp 90 degree turn to the left at the point where we heard the rails, on the right side near a telephone pole. Clapper rails were also calling in the marsh, but at different locations further north. Good birding. |
