I went to Baker Park this morning to photograph the young Black-crowned Night-Herons. Unfortunately I didn't get many pictures because shortly after I got there my parents discovered a young heron that had fallen out of its nest and broke its wing close to the shoulder the wing was twisted 180 degrees I knew it wasn't good but I decided to give it every chance it could get. So we took a trip to Second Chance (no pun intended) and they confirmed my diagnosis. They gladly gave me three groundhogs to release in exchange ( I used to volunteer there and they know how much I like animalsThey said DNR didn't look favorably upon amputating so it would probably be euthanized but they had a BCNH that fell out of its nest at the National Zoo and it needed company so they are keeping it until they get a clearer picture of the situation. I will call on Monday and find out what happened. On a lighter note does anybody know if this Black-Crowned Night-Heron rookery has been here in years past residents comment about never having seen them before is it a new rookery or just non birders not noticing them?
