Tim and I hiked Sugarloaf yesterday (Sunday 7 June 2009) and were happily surprised to find a Cerulean. We bird by ear when hiking so as to get practiced at identifying by song (only after migration ends, thank you!). We've never heard a Cerulean there before so this was a nice surprise.
Overall it was quite a birdy day with lots of Ovenbirds, Scarlet Tanagers, Worm-eating Warblers. In past years, I've had quite a few Black-throated Blue Warblers on what I think of as the "back-side" of the mountain - the area below the parking lots but this year none have been heard or seen. As always, lots and lots of Black-and-White Warblers, Great-crested Flycatchers, Peewees, Acadians, Wood Thrushes. Last week was particularly wonderful as we had a Wood Thrush sing up and a Veery singing down one after the other. No Veery yesterday, though. Blackpolls last week but none this week.
