Dave Harvey and i drove to Ocean City/Fenwick Island today but missed on the
Spoonbill. Spent from 10:30 am until 1:00 pm, including an enjoyable lunch,
around and at the Catch 54, including scanning the trees for roosting birds
but with no success. We spent the afternoon checking Skimmer Island where
we had Skimmers, and then a quick visit to Assateague Island where the most
unexpected sighting was a pair of Common Nighthawks over the dunes at about
2:45 pm. We once more drove the length of Ocean City and stopped at the
Catch 54 for about 25 minutes around 4:15 pm, again without success,
although some Egrets were now perched in the trees. Staff at restaurant
reported no one seemed to have seen the bird today, although it seemed we
may have been only ones searching. We heard a Clapper Rail calling in the
marsh just before we left the restaurant to return to the western shore on
our 12+ hour round trip. --
