This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, July 14, at noon.

Top birds this week are MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD* in VA, GREAT WHITE EGRET*in
VA, and ROSEATE SPOONBILL* in DE.

Other birds of interest include BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK*, NORTHERN
BOBWHITE, WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, ANHINGA, WHITE
IBIS, MISSISSIPPI KITE, KING RAIL, COMMON MOORHEN, PIPING PLOVER, AMERICAN
AVOCET, MARBLED GODWIT, POMARINE JAEGER, terns including ROSEATE, EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVE, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, SWAINSON'S WARBLER, DICKCISSEL, and RED
CROSSBILL.

A female MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD* was seen July 12 at Back Bay NWR, Virginia
Beach, VA soaring to the south about a quarter-mile north of the entrance to
False Cape State Park.

The GREAT WHITE EGRET* reported at Chincoteague NWR, VA last week was seen
again this week with reports from July 9 and 10.  The bird has the
appearance of a great egret with black bill and facial skin. The bird has
been sighted on the left of the wildlife drive just beyond the entry point
where the road opens in the proximity of Snow Goose Pool.

ROSEATE SPOONBILLS* continue to be seen in DE with reports during the week
of one bird in the vicinity of the Catch 54 Restaurant off Rte 54 on Fenwick
Island, Sussex Co, DE.  Another ROSEATE SPOONBILL, this one at Fowler Beach,
Sussex Co, DE, (which was first spotted on July 6), was seen on July 8 at
the same time as the one was seen on Fenwick Island.  The bird on Fenwick
Island was also seen on the 12th at the end of Madison Ave.

The BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK continues at Silver Lake in Rehoboth Beach,
Sussex Co, DE.

NORTHERN BOBWHITES were reported from Beauvue Ponds, St Mary's Co, MD on
July 7.  BOBWHITES were also heard in the Lincoln area of Loudoun Co, VA on
the 12th & 13th.

A WILSON'S STORM-PETREL and a POMARINE JAEGER were seen July 9 from the
ORV/OSV Zone of Assateague Island National Seashore, Worcester Co, MD and
three WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were seen at the Ocean City MD inlet on the
11th.

An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was seen at Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD on
July 7 and 11.

A female ANHINGA was found July 12 in the one of the bald cypress near the
clubhouse at the Stumpy Lake Golf Course in the Kempsville area of Va Beach,
VA.

An immature WHITE IBIS was found in Augusta Co, VA on July 9.  A flock of 10
WHITE IBIS, adult and immature birds, were found at the Northampton Co, VA
Sanitary Landfill on July 10.

MISSISSIPPI KITES continue to be seen in the West Springfield area of
Fairfax Co, VA with reports from July 7 and July 12.  Three were seen in the
Kings Park subdivision, Fairfax Co, VA, on July 9.

A KING RAIL was seen July 11 crossing the road on the Wildlife Trail at
Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co, VA.  Two COMMON MOORHENS were found
along Elliott Island Rd, Dorchester Co, MD on July 7.  A COMMON MOORHEN was
seen July 12 behind the Catch 54 Restaurant on Fenwick Island, Sussex Co,
DE.

On July 8, at least 11 PIPING PLOVERS were seen at the Eagle's Nest
Campground, south of Ocean City, Worcester Co, MD.  Three PIPING PLOVERS and
a GULL-BILLED TERN were seen there on July 9.

An AMERICAN AVOCET was found July 9 at the lake at Piney Run Park, Carroll
Co, MD.

A MARBLED GODWIT was found July 11 at Skimmer Island, Ocean City, MD.

A GULL-BILLED TERN and a SANDWICH TERN were seen July 8 on Skimmer Island,
Ocean City, MD.  A SANDWICH TERN was seen there on both July 9 and 11.  A
ROSEATE TERN was the highlight of a visit to the ORV/OSV Zone of Assateague
Island National Seashore, Worcester Co, MD on July 9.  SANDWICH TERNS were
seen on the same visit.

Two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were spotted along Rte 600 in Northampton Co,
VA, just north of the intersection of Rte 600 & Rte 645, Cedar Grove Dr, on
July 10.  A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was seen July 12 at a house in a pine
tree across the street from Sussex Eye Center in Selbyville about 10 miles
west of the Catch 54 Restaurant on Rte 54. 

A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was seen July 7 at the intersection of Rte 2 and Mt.
Harmony Rd, Calvert Co, MD.

A SWAINSON'S WARBLER was seen July 12 in the vicinity of the MAPS banding
station on Jericho Ditch, Great Dismal Swamp NWR, Suffolk, VA.

DICKCISSELS continue to be reported from a wide variety of locations.
On July 7 and 11 they were reported from Beauvue Ponds, St Mary's Co, MD,
and on July 10 several were singing along Grassdale RD, Remington, Fauquier
Co, VA.

Two RED CROSSBILLS were found at Elkhorn Lake, Augusta Co, VA on July 11;
another was heard a little later that same day in the George Washington
National Forest.
