Just to add to Phil Davis' last post. I got decent views of the bird as
it headed south at a fast pace. Making it hard for me to explain to the
others exactly where it was. Here are more details on the Booby. At 11:20 I
spotted a Booby like bird Coming in fast from the north. I alerted Phil
and Mike of the bird. While the others looked for it I tried my best to give
directions to where the bird was and at the same time take mental notes of
the sulid as it passed me.
The first thing I noticed about it is that the upper-parts of the bird
were all dark brown with no signs of white near the tail. Tail was noticeably
longer then the N. Gannet . the underside was a lighter brown with
light yellow feet. The neck was darker brown and beak was gray.
Another thing I noticed is that while in flight it was flapping it's wings
most of the time and I only saw it take two short glides unlike the
Gannet who glides longer and more often.
When Mike found the bird it passed us and was still moving fast. I took
my eyes off the bird to answer a question to one of the many passers-by who
wondered what we where doing. After answering the questions Phil had the
bird and soon after lost it. After the bird was gone I took notes and drew
a sketch of the Brown Booby. I stayed for another 2 hours in hopes of
seeing it again but with no luck and since I had to go feed and handle the
birds of prey at Shad Landing SP I decided to leave. After reviewing all
my findings at home ( looking at my notes, sketch, 2 bird books, National
Geo, and Sibley, and the pictures that Frode Jacobsen took of the Brown
Booby) I can safely say that I saw the Assateague Brown Booby. ( not a
lifer but a MD first for me )
