Les,
I live in Peach Bottom, PA. This afternoon (2
August) my neighbors Mike
and Marty Pell were boating on Conowingo Pond.
They saw and
photographed an adult BROWN PELICAN on the
Susquehanna River,
immediately above Conowingo Dam. They saw the
bird in both Cecil and
Harford counties, MD. Mike called me at about 4
PM, immediately after
they saw it, but I was not home. He called me
again at about 5 PM with
an update. By 5:30 PM he had picked up my son
David, my grandson Adam,
and me, and we motored the 7 miles downriver to
Conowingo Dam. We found
the Brown Pelican fairly quickly, resting on the
water near the center
of the river, about 200 feet upriver from the dam.
When Mike forwards his photos to me, I will send
them on to Les for
posting and the rarities committee.
To the best of my knowledge, this is the second
record for Brown Pelican
at Conowingo Dam. The first one was present below
the dam quite a few
years ago, 21-24 December, but I forget the year.
When last seen it was
flying upriver and out of sight toward Pennsylvania.
We'll be watching for the current bird upriver in
PA, which is only 5
miles above the dam.
PS: My son just called from Conowingo Dam on his
way home to Baltimore.
He saw the Brown Pelican sitting on the water
in the same place. This
was at 7:15 PM, Sunday.
Sincerely,
BOB SCHUTSKY
