This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, July 28, at 2:30 pm.

Top birds this week are BROWN BOOBY* in MD, GREAT WHITE EGRET* in VA,
ROSEATE SPOONBILL* in DE, and EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE* in MD.

Other birds of interest include BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK*, LEAST
BITTERN, WHITE IBIS, MISSISSIPPI KITE, shorebirds, PARASITIC JAEGER, terns,
HENSLOW'S SPARROW, and SUMMER TANAGER. 

A BROWN BOOBY* was spotted from the start of the ORV Zone, Assateague
Island, Worcester Co, MD on July 22, 24, 25, 26 and 27.

The GREAT WHITE EGRET* continues to be seen at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack
Co, VA, with reports from July 21. 

ROSEATE SPOONBILLS* continue to be seen in DE with reports during the week
in Thousand Acre Marsh near the intersection of Rt 9 and Dutch Neck Road,
New Castle Co, DE.

EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES* were spotted from Pocomoke River Road and Fleming
Mill Road, Somerset Co, MD on July 21.
 
The BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK* continues at Silver Lake in Rehoboth
Beach, Sussex Co, DE.  A KING EIDER was one highlight of a trip to Poplar
Island, Talbot Co, MD on July 21.

A LEAST BITTERN was seen at Truitts Landing Road, Worcester Co, MD on July
21 and again on July 22.  Another LEAST BITTERN was seen at Swan Creek
Dredged Material Facility, Anne Arundel Co, MD on July 23.

An immature WHITE IBIS continues to be seen at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax
Co, VA, with reports from July 21, 22, 23, 25, 26 and 27.
Another immature WHITE IBIS was feeding with an immature GLOSSY IBIS at
Shirley Plantation, Charles City Co, VA on July 23.

MISSISSIPPI KITES were spotted over the Kings Park neighborhood, West
Springfield, Fairfax Co, VA on July 23 and 24.

Demonstrating that shorebird migration is truly underway, Poplar Island,
Talbot Co, MD hosted 14 shorebird species including BLACK-BELLIED and
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, WILLET, RUDDY TURNSTONE, SEMIPALMATED, WESTERN, LEAST,
PECTORAL and STILT SANDPIPERS, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and a WILSON'S
PHALAROPE on July 21. A CURLEW SANDPIPER in fall plumage was seen at
Taylor's Gut near Woodland Beach, Kent Co, DE on Jul 24 and 25.  A STILT
SANDPIPER was on the dirt section of the Summit Hill Turf Farm, about one
half mile upstream of Sycamore Landing on July 26.  Shorebirds at Skimmer
Island, Worcester Co, MD on July 26 included WILLET, WHIMBREL, RUDDY
TURNSTONE and RED KNOT.

A PARASITIC JAEGER was spotted from the ORV Zone of Assateague Island on
July 24.

This was a great week for terns.  Sightings included GULL-BILLED TERN on
July 21 from Castaways Campground overlooking Assateague Island, Worcester
Co, MD; Two GULL-BILLED TERNS from Taylors Landing Road, Worcester Co, MD on
July 22; SANDWICH TERN from Castaways on July 21 and 22 and Skimmer Island
on July 24 and 26; A ROSEATE TERN from Assateague Island National Seashore
on July 21; and an adult ARCTIC TERN at Assateague Island on July 22. An
adult BLACK TERN was seen at Violette's Lock, Montgomery Co, MD on July 23
and 26. More BLACK TERNS were at Skimmer Island on July 26 and on Assateague
Island on July 27.

One HENSLOW'S SPARROW was spotted along Aaron Run Road, Garrett Co, MD on
July 27.

A SUMMER TANAGER was spotted at the BLACKWATER NWR, Dorchester Co, MD on
July 23.
