Decidedly, a more productive Nighthawk evening this evening, August
30 -- a total of 31 Common Nighthawks in all. The great majority
came over our house in two distinct groups between 7:00 p.m. and 7:05
p.m., with just a few individuals seen afterwards, up to 7:45 p.m.,
at which time I had sustained triple figures in mosquito bites and
withdrew indoors. Boy, it is getting dark much earlier these
days. Max. count of Chimney Swifts was only about 4. Not many open
chimneys around here any more.
I also noted about 250 Common Grackles, maybe more, moving west to
east in this time period. A young male Ruby-throated Hummingbird
attended our newly replenished sugar water feeder many times until it
was almost dark. In recent days we have not seen this bird, only one
or two female plumaged (juvenile?) Ruby-throated Hummingbirds.
