Some bird behavior questions:
1) Last weekend, I was fortunate to get a great extended look at a Red Headed woodpecker at Hughes Hollow. The bird spent at least 20 minutes actively hawking insects. I don't know if I have seen any other type of woodpecker do this--is this fairly typical behavior?
2) Also last weekend, I watched 3 separate double-crested commorants flying down the Potomac staying just about a foot or two above the surface of the water but not landing. I watched each of these birds fly down for at least a mile. Is this typical migrating behavior (they just follow low over the river?) and are they coming into roost for the night?
Hawk Mountain
My wife and I are planning on taking a trip to Hawk Mountain later this month (probably overnight). It has been many years since I have been probably 15 years or so. I would appreciate any advice/suggestions in terms of places to stay etc. I do remember that fall weekends bring out droves of people many of whom did not seem particularly interested in birds. Please send responses to this question off-line to me at
Thank you,
Matt (Rockville)
