Over 1,800 Broad-winged Hawks were counted today at Cromwell Valley Park. Most of these birds were very high and difficult to pick out against a clear blue sky. We relied heavily upon the keen vision of several young observers in our group who were calling out kettles of BWs at great distances. Within minutes of their sightings the hawks would become visible to the rest of us as they streamed by overhead. This happened over and over most of the day to everyone's delight. Thanks to everyone who carefully scanned the sky. Our largest group of BWs was just under 100 birds.
To those who visit the HAWKCOUNT web site please be aware that I mistakenly listed 9 Merlins when I meant 9 Kestrels. No merlins were seen today.
We did see a Red-headed Woodpecker.
