Hi --

Had a morning appointment so just time to visit Brookside Gardens and nearby
Wheaton Regional Park for an hour or so. A good early flight of diurnal
migrants such as Robins, Flickers and Jays with few other species save an
abundance of Catbirds. However as always, with perseverance, some
interesting birds were seen. We did have an amusing few minutes watching a
huge (probably female) Cooper's Hawk trying to catch a loudly complaining
Kingfisher at Pine Lake. The hawk chased the KF back and forth several
times, every time it got within a few talons' length, the Kingfisher would
dive into the water. The Coopers would then sit panting on a lakeside branch
while the KF would fly up and perch on a wood duck nest box and chuckle
loudly. Finally the hawk called it a day and flew off. Kingfisher 1, Hawk 0.

Birds of interest (most in Brookside proper):

Pied-bill Grebe - 2 (Pine Lake)
Cooper's Hawk - 1 (")
Ruby-throated Hummingbird - 2
"Traill's" Flycatcher - 1 (possible Willow, grayish, distinct crested look
to head)
Eastern Wood-pewee - 2
Eastern Phoebe - 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 2
Wood Thrush - 3
Swainson's Thrush - 1
Catharus sp. - 2
Brown Thrasher - 6
Gray Catbird - 25+
Magnolia Warbler - 2
Black-throated Green Warbler - 1
Redstart - 1
Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 3
Baltimore Oriole - 1 female
Chipping Sparrow - 1
