Here is a summary of our Taylor's Island sector of the Dorchester Fall Count on Sat. 19th (below).? Highlights included a Golden Eagle, 7 Broad-winged Hawks, 1 Black-bellied Plover, 4 Red-headed Woodpeckers, 2 Northern Rough-winged Swallows, 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, a Swainson's Thrush, and a Tennessee, Cape May, and Blackburnian Warbler.

Subject: TAYLORS ISLAND DATE

Harry, 2009 was a record count for us with 89 species, helped in no
small way by the kettles of raptors that took advantage of thermals
and the prevailing North winds. Unfortunately (for us), the same
overnight front that brought in the raptors also provided tail winds
for many songbird migrants. I had a great fallout of flycatchers,
thrushes, orioles, and finches in my Easton yard the previous day
but, alas, most of them left overnight! Hard to believe, but we
found no American Robin on Taylor's Island all day; we had to wait
until we got back to the mainland to find the 3 that we counted. We
started at 6:00 AM specifically to hear an owl or two but no
dice. On the other hand, our constant whistled Screech-owl imitation
was answered by no less than 5 in broad daylight. Go figure.?
?

I have attached a pdf file that summarizes our count data for this
and the past 3 years. Just in case you cannot open it, the 2009 data
are provided below. If you need descriptions of any unusual
sightings, I am prepared to provide them. I would point out that the
Golden Eagle was reported by several locals after we said we had seen
it (first by one of the junior birders). We eventually saw it again
2 additional times, both with great looks at the golden head and
whitish tail base characteristic of a near-adult bird.?
