Friends of mine were at the OC Inlet this past Sunday morning. While going through the gulls sitting in the parking lot, a "gull-like" bird soared in raptor-like (from the direction of the water) and began harassing the gull flock with sharp, steep angular dives. The bird they noted was of median gull size (present was Ring-billed to Great Black-backed size, perhaps Laugher as well), but built for fast, quick turns relative to the now disturbed gulls. Also noted was a reddish hue to the underside mostly observed in the breast/throat area. The collection of birds, gulls and harasser, moved this activity out over the ocean where the behavior continued. I'm thinking imm. Parasitic Jaeger. Any comments on jaeger or similiar behavioral observations "down the ocean" past or present would be interesting.
