I went to Piscataway Park this afternoon and enjoyed watching the Eared Grebe off and on from 2:00 pm until after 4:00. As previously reported, the grebe was in the water near the boardwalk. The bird was actively feeding the entire time, constantly swimming about and diving, but always remaining in the small cove near the boardwalk. Also present were lots of Gadwall, as well as smaller numbers of American Wigeon, Lesser Scaup, and Mallards. One Pied-billed Grebe and one Red-breasted Merganser were also present. Another highlight was the young Red-headed Woodpecker that I saw off the spur trail running from the boardwalk (I heard one or two other Red-headed Woodpeckers as well). Thank you to all the people who have posted about this great bird over the past week. I am glad that it has hung around this long.
