Gary,

My database shows 14 previous reports of Glaucous Gull in the district; many of these multiple sightings . The dates run from Dec. 18 to Apr. 9 making  yours an early arrival record . The first was in the Tidal Basin on Apr. 5-9, 1914. Other locations have been in the Potomac River, Washington Channel, Hains Point, Georgetown Reservoir, and Anacostia Park. Multiple individuals were recorded in 1988 (3), 1994 and 1996 (2 each). There have probably been other sightings I do not have in the database. The most recent I have listed was in 2004.

Dear All

Just a quick note to post that there was a 1st winter Glaucous Gull in the Tidal Basin gull roost this morning.  It departed at 7.10am and I lost sight of it in flight unsure as to which direction it departed.  I searched the Anacostia, Washington Channel/Hains Pt and went back to the basin at around 8.30 but couldn't relocate it.  For those who might want to look for it then a visit to the roost this afternoon is definitely worth a try or a pre-dawn vigil tomorrow.

I don't have a photo site but will email some terrible pics to the usual laridophiles - do let me know off list if you'd like copies.

Best
