I arrived in Solomons at the Chesapeake Biological Lab pier at 0640. There was just a hint of light, enough for me to tell that there were zero gulls on the pier. So much for my long-held belief that the gulls roosted there overnight. A few gulls started flying in from the north, some landing on the pier, others in the water. A few minutes later, Joe Turner and Leslie Starr arrived and we scoped the small assemblage of gulls (25-30?) with no luck. Yesterday afternoon, the pier was pretty much solid gulls for the entire length. So, perhaps the gulls will have arrived by now for their morning preen or perhaps the afternoon is a better time to try for it. Anyway, I had to leave by 0710 but Joe and Leslie were still there. Hopefully they'll have better luck as time goes by!
