Paul,
We were on Kauai and the Big Island in 2001. I went with a guide one
day into the Alakai Swamp, and we managed to find all of the endemic
species on the island. Good guy. He was involved with some of the
conservation projects for the most endangered species. If you want to
try something like that, here's the contact information I have, from http://www.hawaiiaudubon.com/birding/

On Hawaii, Hawaii Forest and Trails has good trips, but these are
organized group trips, not one-on-one like David's. At the time we
were there, there were no pelagics available, and the one whale-
watching trip we tried was fine for whales, but not worthwhile for
birds.
We pretty much fell in love with Kauai. We went on a heli tour of the
island and a boat ride around to the Na Pali coast, neither bird
related but both greatly interesting.
If you want, I can send you my 11-page writeup of the trip. It is more
a personal journal than anything else, but does mention all the places
I went birding and what I found.
