Had a nice birding morning in DC - tried to take advantage of this
last burst of warm weather. A male Common Merganser was on the Tidal
Basin - the first I've seen in DC this fall/winter. Thanks to Gail &
Barry and others for noting the Cackling Goose by the Jefferson - it
is still there and looking rather squat.
Only saw 20 or so Scaups at the end of Hains Point, nothing else of
note there. Kenilworth park had a rather disheveled immature
Peregrine Falcon flying around and occasionally playing tag with a
Fish Crow. An adult Red-tailed Hawk was also in the park having fun
buzzing a huge flock of Canada Geese.
I once again struck out on the Orange-crowned Warbler at Poplar Point
in Anacostia Park - this bird has quickly become quite the nemesis for
me. The usual Kestrel was out and about.
Cheers,
Steve Hersey
