We had an immature goshawk in our yard this afternoon, Sunday after the
snowstorm. It was feeding on a bird down on the ground among our
Rose-of-Sharon bushes. It was quite a striking sight. I spotted it
after it had already consumed a great deal. It was very thorough,
tearing and eating flesh and pulling feathers and didn't leave much. I
will try to identify its prey when I go out tomorrow morning to fill
the feeders. The light superciliary stripe was clearly visible, as
were the light spots on its back. Some titmice and chickadees came in
and gave alarm notes and mobbing calls, and a couple of juncos hung
around the feeder nervously, but flew off. I have 2 photos, made
with my cheap Canon digital camera through the window. Perhaps someone can suggest how to post them so others can see them.
