Since no one has commented on the results of the Catoctin CBC on Monday I thought I would mention some highlights. I believe the best bird of the count was the Double-crested Cormorant seen by Barbara Gearhart and Mike Welch on Hunting Creek Lake, a great find in the middle of December on a mountain lake. My personal highlights were two adult Red-headed Woodpeckers, both in areas where they are resident (one in Frederick Co. & one in Carroll Co.), two Snipe and 51 Killdeer in a flooded field on Sixes Road about a mile north of Sixes Bridge, an immature Tundra Swan and a Ruddy Duck in Emmitsburg, 17 Kestrels in our territory, an adult Bald Eagle perched in a tree on Motters Station Road, and the continuing Lapland Longspur at the edge of the count circle in Carroll Co. The latter bird was seen in both the AM and PM as it flew by calling. Neither time did we see it on the ground.

Thanks again to Mike for hosting the tally. The choice of a weekday turned out well.
