Hi Carol, Alex, and Everyone,

I have seen this gull recently as well--on 23 Dec 2009 in a large Ring-billed Gull roost on the beach at Ocean City and on 29 Dec 2009 on West OC Pond. I also contacted the researchers who tagged the gull and got the following response. I've been meaning to post it to the list; I guess this is the time to do it.

What a cool opportunity this is to see where one of "our" winter gulls came from and also to track its movements around the Ocean City area while it's here.

Have fun,

This bird was seen during the OC CBC on West Ocean City Pond and at the
Inlet as well.

A quick online search reveals this study (
http://www.mass.gov/dcr/waterSupply/watershed/study/index.htm) of bird usage
of reservoirs in Massachusetts. Ring-billed gulls in this study are tagged
with pinkish-orange fluorescent tags emblazoned with alpha-numeric codes,
beginning with the letter "A." Also, birds have been reported widely ranging
up into Canada that were tagged in this study.

I've left a message with the study contact reporting this gull and asking if
it is one of his birds, as the wing tags pictured only have two digit
numerical portions of the code and are circular rather than the rectangular
tags on gull A377.
