BROWN PELICANS AT RISK, WINTER OF 2010.
I’ve just received some information from John Weske that 29 Brown Pelicans were recently received at Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research, Inc., in Newark, Delaware. They are suffering from the cold, some with frostbite, and were captured after they became too weak to fly. Most (all?) were captured in St. Mary’s County, MD, but the 12 that were banded had been tagged in NC or else in the central Chesapeake but in Virginia. One was a Holland Island, MD, bird.
The conventional wisdom, from other winters, is that these are inexperienced birds that did not migrate when they should have. However, 12 of the 29 were banded and several of those were not birds of the year in 2009. All were banded as chicks.
With the cold weather continuing it seems likely there will be more pelicans at risk. Already some have died before being rescued. I believe the Washington Post is doing, or has done, a story on the problems pelicans are having this winter.
Tri-State does good work. Consider supporting them. For one reason, the pelicans are expensive, consuming lots of herring. On their website the pelis are the lead item. 302-737-9543, answered from 9-5 every day. 110 Possum Hollow Road, Newark, Delaware 19711. www.tristatebird.org Their winter hours are 8-5 seven days a week. I didn’t see a general e-mail on their website and I don’t know if my posting will result in a deluge of correspondence to a person who is probably already extremely busy but … here goes … Erica Miller is a vet there at:
