Subject: Shrike in Washington County
Hi Bob,
Barbara Gearhart and I went to look for the Northern Shrike reported by Brad Lanning. We found a shrike right where Brad described, but we are convinced that the bird is a Loggerhead. The mask was quite heavy with only a trace of white above it. The bill was short and all black with only a tiny hook. The top of the head and back were dark. There was no scalloping on the breast of the bird. Finally, the shape of the bird was chunky like a typical Loggerhead.
Interestingly, it is probably within a mile or two of where the Loggerhead Shrike was seen last year.
It would be great if you could check it out.
