The Red-throated Loon reported by Jim Green and found by Kyle Carstensen,
Dave Young and Jim, was still at Riley's Lock at 4:15 PM.
When I drove in, the loon was 100 yards up Seneca Creek, actively feeding.
Good views from the road. I went up on the aqueduct and proceeded up the
tow path, observing seven ruddy ducks, seven scaup (sp.) in the Potomac,
and eight bluebirds along the bank of the river.
When I returned, the loon was very close to the aqueduct, and called three
times. It was so close, I could not see it and the calls reverberated off
the bridge. Most exciting!
I proceeded over the little bridge and there was the loon, right below me,
perhaps 30 feet away, affording exceptional looks at this out of habitat
bird. Best looks by far in Maryland.
