Since I was having such a great day, I thought I would try my luck again at
finding the Loggerhead Shrike this afternoon. I arrived at the location
along Rt. 40 near Hagerstown and met Anna Urciolo. She had been looking for
the bird with others for about an hour. We chatted for a bit and around
1:20PM, I spotted the LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE atop the deciduous tree surrounded
by cedars nearest Rt. 40 on the south side. While I was not able to get
"amazing" photos, I did get some amazing looks in the afternoon light.

The shrike was actively foraging - frequently swooping down to the ground
from its perch in the middle of the corn stubble field. Not long after I
commented "I sure would like to see it catch something.", the shrike swooped
down and then perched on a tall piece of corn stubble. Low and behold it had
a mouse in its bill! Anna and I watched the bird fly west toward an area
surrounded by a chain-link fence w/ barbed wire. It perched atop a tree
along the fence row and then disappeared around 2:00PM. If this bird is
going to stick around, this fence might make a good location for the shrike
to build its larder. What a great day and what fascinating ecology!

Good luck to all those seeking this shrike!
