American Coot and Lesser Black-backed Gull in Downtown Salisbury--1/18/2010

Hi Everyone,

While stuck at a red light in downtown Salisbury at 2:25 this afternoon (18 Jan 2010), I saw a small bird on the Wicomico River near 4 Canada Geese.  I had time to get my binoculars on it before the light changed: an AMERICAN COOT.

I stopped by later in the day to scan the gulls and to see if the coot was still around (I didn't see it).  There is a convenient parking lot right on the Wicomico River near the drawbridge on W. Main St.  The Brew River Restaurant is a good landmark.  Across the river from the parking lot is a vacant lot used by gulls, often in large numbers.  One nice thing about this location is that the gulls are close enough that you don't need a scope.  An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was present with the other gulls today (see full eBird list from the later stop below).
