With Sue Ricciardi and Debbie Terry I helped with the Prince George's County Winter Count today in the Upper Marlboro area. Our highlights:

Cackling Goose  4 apparently a family group at Schoolhouse Pond in large flock of Canadas

Shoveler  44 mostly at Depot Pond

Common Merganser  39 at Depot Pond

Harrier  1 female on M elwood Road

Iceland Gull  1 second-winter bird at Schoolhouse Pond

Lesser Black-back  2 adults at Schoolhouse Pond

Sapsucker  5 for the day

Phoebe  1 at Depot Pond

Otherwise, land bird numbers were generally low, particularly sparrows. Geese numbered about 1,000 at Schoolhouse Pond and the 1,500 or so gulls there were crowded onto the small remaining patch of ice. The landfill and recycling center were closed today.
