Over parts of Friday and Saturday I did a count for the Great Backyard Bird Count with my 3 kids at our house. We got 46 species. We saw nothing that is new for my yardlist to report for the year, but it was fun counting with the kids. Highlights include the continuing oriole, and very high bird activity at the feeders all day long. Also, 'tho I missed it, my wife Alison and son Sam were watching some Olympics when they saw a Red-shouldered hawk come blasting in to the feeders and take a small bird. From what they described, we think it was a junco. It was so close to the house the hawk banged up against a full-glass door when it caught the sparrow, and stood there for a moment about 10 feet away from them before it flew off with its catch. Alison and Sam were highly impressed!
