Jane Kostenko and I ventured down Turner Road and Soller's Wharf Road, in Calvert, around 10 am to look for Lapland Longspurs, among other things. Whiffed on that but hadn't really expected to score. We also didn't find the large goose flock that Pat Rose found at the end of Turner Road yesterday. However, we found a single American Pipit foraging in the hay pile behind the green barn. The manure pile down toward the end of the road had a nice group of Horned Larks and several Savannah Sparrows. There was an American Kestrel hunting from the power line then further down near the goose flock. We'd be very interested to see if anyone else drives down there today and what they find. Perhaps we were too early?

We headed down to the end of Mill Bridge Road and turned left onto Soller's Wharf Road hoping for better luck with field birds. There were none. So we drove to the end of the road and most of St. Leonard's Creek was frozen over. However, there was some open water where we had a decent assortment of waterfowl.

Now we're just praying that this front comes through and drops rain and not some sort of wintry garbage.
