From the Governor of Maryland
TUNDRA SWAN WATCHING WEEK
MARCH 7-13, 2010
WHEREAS, Tundra Swan watchers in Maryland and elsewhere in North America enjoy observing the
pre-migratory staging concentrations and migrations of these elegant swans with seven feet
wingspreads; and
WHEREAS, Tundra Swan watching is a popular activity in Maryland where we have several important
wintering and pre-migratory staging areas as part of the eastern migration corridor; and
WHEREAS, Chesapeake Bay, the lower Susquehanna River, and sometimes nearby and other farm
fields in the State are places to observe and photograph Tundra Swans; and
WHEREAS, Tundra Swans are superb ambassadors for wetlands protections and preservation. Tundra Swan
watching and photography is part of wildlife tourism in Maryland, with accompanying
economic benefits to small towns and rural communities where these swans can be seen; and
WHEREAS, all Marylanders are encouraged to explore opportunities to observe the spectacular beauty and natural
wonder of congregating migrating Tundra Swans,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MARTIN O'MALLEY, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MARUYLAND, do hereby proclaim March 7-13, 2010 as TUNDRA SWAN WATCHING WEEK in Maryland, and do commend this celebration to all of our citizens.
