We found the Sandhill Crane in a field off of River Road between the NIH
facility and the Patton Turf Farm. The crane was along the wood line in a
field that includes the large powerline right of way on the right side of
the road if you were heading towards the turf farm from NIH. It was about
2.6 miles from the junction of River Road and Elmer School Road. The tree
line where we saw it had an elevated dark green blind about halfway down the
tree line. It was alone. No Canada Geese were with it. We originally
found it just after 12:30 pm and it was still in the same location when we
left around 1:00 pm. There was a point when it moved away from the treeline
and into the field to forage. Even though it was more than 200 yards away
from the road, it seemed nervous when several bicyclists went by. By the
time we left, it had moved back to the tree line. I took several pictures
of it, but it was at the far edge of the range of my camera. Playing in
Google Earth I put the location of the bird at 39° 7'35.90"N 77°29'44.36"W
I guess in the future, I’ll take a GPS with me.
