Hi Paul, et al.
Basically, all Trumpeter Swan reports are still on hold right now
until we can pull together (1) the current status of all the northern
reintroduction programs and (2) the records committee status of the
species from the other Northeastern states. We should be ready to
take this off the table sometime this year.
We have never had to deal with a reintroduction issue like this, so
there is little precedent to guide us as to when and how to change
its status from extirpated to an unqualified species on the official
list. The decisions of other Northeast records committee's who have
already dealt with this issue will be relevant inputs to our
deliberations. The trigger that will invoke this status determination
process will probably be a finding of of an accepted identification
of at least one of the reports that are in the committee's queue.
Good question. Hope this helps ...
Phil
