This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday March 16, at
8:30   AM.

Top birds this week are CALIFORNIA GULL* in VA and PAINTED BUNTING in MD.

Other birds of interest include geese and swan migrants, EURASIAN WIGEON,
COMMON EIDER, scoters, NORTHERN BOBWHITE, OSPREY, GOLDEN EAGLE, AMERICAN
WOODCOCK, BLACK-HEADED GULL, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, EASTERN PHOEBE,
hummingbird, TREE SWALLOW, AMERICAN PIPIT, PINE WARBLER, AMERICAN TREE
SPARROW, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and PINE SISKIN.

A CALIFORNIA GULL* was reported in the Ft. Story area of the beach at First
Landing SP, Virginia Beach, VA on Mar 14 and 15.

A male PAINTED BUNTING is still being seen at a feeder in Bowie, Prince
George's Co, MD with the latest report on March 14. The hosts request that
birders contact them by e-mail for directions and a viewing time (to ease

There were many reports of geese and swan migrants during the week including
large flocks of SNOW GEESE, CANADA GEESE, and TUNDRA SWANS.

A EURASIAN WIGEON was reported at Ridgeway Park in Hampton, VA on Mar 10 and
14. A EURASIAN WIGEON was found at the North Pond in the Logan Tract off of
Kitts Hummock Rd, Ted Harvey Conservation Area, DE on Mar 9.

An immature male COMMON EIDER was located at 21st Street, Little Creek
Inlet, Norfolk, VA on Mar 9. 

Thousands of SURF SCOTERS and BLACK SCOTERS were seen gathering for
migration off of Cape Henlopen SP, DE on Mar 9. Smaller numbers of scoters
remained elsewhere in our region.

Sixteen NORTHERN BOBWHITE were found in DE on Mar 14 at Bombay Hook NWR on
the left side of the refuge road after passing Bear Swamp.

Three BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS were spotted in LBJ Grove on Mar 15 close
to the bridge from the Pentagon parking lot and near the Potomac River.

Raptor sightings include reports of OSPREYS from various areas across our
region. A GOLDEN EAGLE flew over Bear Swamp at Bombay Hook NWR, DE, on Mar
9. A PEREGRINE FALCON was spotted at Schoolhouse Pond, Upper Marlboro,
Prince George's Co, MD on Mar 9. A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen from the
Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC on Mar 15. 

AMERICAN WOODCOCK reports are widespread including seven at Southwest Area
Park, Baltimore, MD on Mar 9; four off Old Landing Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE
on Mar 9; and two at Irvine Nature Center, Owings Mills, Howard Co, MD on
Mar 13.

A BLACK-HEADED GULL was spotted on the beach west of 28th Bay St, Norfolk,
VA on Mar 9. Early LAUGHING GULLS are being reported in the shore areas of
our region. A FORSTER'S TERN was seen at Wye Landing, Queen Anne's Co, MD on
Mar 11. 

Two EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES were found on Mar 12 along Seymour Dr, South
Boston, Halifax Co, VA.

A Selasphorus Hummingbird of unidentified species has been visiting a feeder
in Richmond, VA with sightings on March 9 and 10.

An EASTERN PHOEBE showed at Hains Point, Washington, DC, on March 10.
Other EASTERN PHOEBE reports came from various areas in our region.

Swallow arrivals include a TREE SWALLOW at Occoquan NWR, Prince William Co,
VA on Mar 9; eight TREE SWALLOWS at Oxbow Lake, Anne Arundel Co, MD on Mar
12; and a BARN SWALLOW in the company of multiple TREE SWALLOWS at Hughes
Hollow, Montgomery Co, MD on Mar 14.

Four AMERICAN PIPITS were spotted on Mar 14 on the ground at the picnic area
of Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA.

Early warbler arrivals included a PINE WARBLER at a feeder in Dentsville,
Charles Co, MD on Mar 12; a PINE WARBLER by the maintenance yard, Huntley
Meadows Pk, Fairfax Co, VA on Mar 14; a PINE WARBLER along Haul Road, Dyke
Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA on Mar 14; and a PINE WARBLER in Callaway, St. Mary's
Co, MD on Mar 15.

On March 9, three AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were reported at Occoquan NWR,
Prince William Co, VA. An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW has been reported in the
same vicinity of Bowie, MD as the earlier-noted PAINTED BUNTING. 

About 20 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were on the ground at Huntley Meadows Pk , Fairfax
Co, VA on Mar 10. Two RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were spotted close to Haul Rd, Dyke
Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA on Mar 14. About ten RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen in the
trees north of the ballfield at Davidsonville Pk, Anne Arundel Co, MD on Mar
15.

Five PINE SISKINS were found in the Van Ness area of Washington, DC on Mar
11.
