Location: Oxbow Lake
Observation date: 3/14/10
Notes: Overnight on Mar 13, the gage height for the Little Patuxent River at
Savage, MD reached 11.5 feet (http://waterdata.usgs.gov/md/nwis/uv/?site_no=01594000&agency_cd=USGS).
What that means is the Little Patuxent flooded back into Oxbow Lake, So the lake
water level was raised, but is already retreating back into the outlet channel
because the beaver dam remains unrepaired. Last week there was more of the lake
bottom exposed as mudflats than I had ever seen. As soon as the rain and
flooding from upstream ends, the Oxbow will probably have mudflats exposed again
until the beavers repair the dam. Jay Sheppard visited late afternoon and
reported these birds as well as one Red Fox.
