On Friday night Wendy and Rob Olson joined me for an American Woodcock
(AMWO) search at Irvine Nature Center. We did not see or hear AMWOs; but had
a very pleasant 3 1/2 hours of birding. We had excellent looks at a flock of
Rusty Blackbirds (18?-I need to check my recordings) feeding in the open on
the wet field. As we crept closer the flock, that was not at all concerned
with us being near, another flock of blackbirds flew over and gave a couple
of flight calls. All the birds on the ground simultaneously looked up, then
launched into the air in pursuit. They quickly joined them. Many other
flocks of Red-winged Blackbird, Common Grackle and Brown-headed cowbird
passed overhead while we were watching the Ructies the ground.

Other highlights included: Barred Owl, Wilsonıs Snipe, Savannah Sparrow and
Pileated Woodpecker.
