This morning we watched a red fox walk all the way across the yard,
retrieve an egg, walk back across the yard, dig into loose wood chips,
bury the egg, walk quickly back, retrieve another egg, and carry it up
the path and into the woods where, presumably, he/she could eat it in
peace or share it. Both Canada geese and mallards have been leaving eggs
around; it was large and white. I don’t know that a goose would choose
to nest in the brush where the eggs were, they usually pick the edge of
the bulkhead where the eggs get drowned in unusually high tides. It
seems more likely to be a duck egg. Has anyone seen this kind of
purposeful food storage before?
