A fast mid-morning walk along the C&O Canal between MP 71 and MP 73 revealed that the Cliff Swallows have returned to their nests on the James Rumsey bridge (MD Rte. 34).

All told I observed 20 species during this aerobic walk. The list is as follows:

Canada Goose
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Pileated Woodpecker
Eastern Phoebe
Warbling Vireo
Fish Crow
Common Raven at nest site
Tree Swallow
Northern Rough-winged Swallow
Cliff Swallow at nests
Carolina Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
Carolina Wren
European (Common) Starling
Northern Parula
Yellow Warbler
Yellow-throated Warbler
Chipping Sparrow
Northern Cardinal
American Goldfinch
