In an attempt to cure 6 h of jet lag I spent the late afternoon at Hughes Hollow. The wind limited songbirds to bluebirds, chickadees, Am. goldfinch, and gnatcatchers, but tree swallows were in their element.
Highlights on the water were hooded merganser, 4 American coot, and a wood duck female performing an extended broken wing display to divert attention from her brood of 8.
Waders included an Am. bittern, a great blue heron, multiple green heron, and one snowy egret.
The air was patrolled by northern harrier and an osprey.
