I relocated a small flock at 1:10 PM today in the field west of Mt. Zion church. The same location as a few days ago. I'm not sure what crop is planted - possibly it's winter wheat. Did anyone ID the grass? Just curious!
I was once again impressed with how the flock hides in the grass and really do not show themselves. Although the white and yellow flashes of the males are quite distinct, if you are lucky to see them, most of the birds like to stay hidden deep in the grass. They will fly up and over the grasstops only to dive again very quickly, from time to time. It seems that there is usually a male or two at the grass tops, or maybe on a power line..., but the rest seem to stay hidden.
Thanks to Kathie Lambert for putting me on these birds at this spot last year. It's so fun to have them return this year, to the exact spot. How do they DO that?!?!?

Joanne,
Thanks a bunch! They were still there at 8:00 this morning.

They are baaackkk! There was a flock of about 20-30 birds that
dove into the grass as I approached, and a few gorgeous males that
sat on the grass tops and sang. I only stayed a moment, so there
may be more birds there. What gorgeous creatures they are!
The church is located on the west side of Lothian Circle, on 422.
The crossroads at the circle are Rt. 2, 408, and 422 (Bayard
Road). Last year I was able to locate the birds for 2-3 days
before they left.
Enjoy!
