I have hardly posted about birds in Ft. Bayard Park this strange spring, because there have been few to report. Even on mornings when it seemed like birds might be around, the frequent heavy winds have made hilltop birding rather tough (in some ways birding conditions have been more like fall than spring). In any event, this morning was probably the most productive of the spring. A briefly-seen flyover swallow was, among other things, so much larger than the nearby swifts that I am comfortable calling it my park-first PURPLE MARTIN.
While there were no other really unusual birds this morning, there was a good assortment of others including:
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Swainson's Thrush (singing)
N. Parula
American Redstart
Magnolia Warbler (female)
Black-throated Blue Warbler(male and female)
Blackpoll Warbler
Chipping Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow (getting late)
