The WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was still there (at the model boat pond at
the Germantown Soccerplex, Montgomery County) at 3:30 p.m. It was in
the company of a Lesser Yellowlegs, and the 2 birds were flying
around together. There was also a Semipalmated Plover and a pair of
Killdeer with at least one young one in tow. Frederick County Bird
Club President Kathy Calvert was looking at these birds when I
left. Other interesting birds near the pond were a 1st year male
Orchard Oriole, a Brown Thrasher, and several Yellow Warblers.
I didn't see Dave Czaplak's post until I returned home to Bethesda
about 4 p.m., so I'm glad that I decided earlier in the day to stop
by at this very location. Timing (and luck) is everything.
En route to the Soccerplex, which I decided to visit on the basis of
earlier posts from Andy Martin, I stopped briefly at the part of
Seneca Creek State Park that is accessed from Riffle Ford Rd. 2
different Virginia Rails were calling from the marshy area about 1/4
mile up the broad trail from where one parks by the road. A
Yellow-throated Vireo was singing loudly in the same area, and I
spied two female Black-throated Blue Warblers on the same branch. Delightful!
