Many thanks to Howard County's Joe Hanfman, who suggested in an
earlier post that tonight (Thursday, May 20) might be a good time to
look out for migrating Common Nighthawks.
I set up on our back lawn in Bethesda (inside the Washington Beltway)
before 8:00 p.m. this evening and had 4 Nighthawks as follows: 1 at
8:05 p.m. heading west, one at 8:10 p.m. heading north; one at 8:25
p.m. just circling around and another at 8:30 p.m. ditto. No big (or
even small) groups.
Not exactly a bonanza, but perhaps about as good as we can expect
these days in the DC area in the spring. Not one of the birds was
vocalizing, at least not loudly enough for me to hear.
Kudos to Joe for his prescience.

At 4:37 pm today, I saw 3 Common Nighthawks at Middle Patuxent
Environmental Area. The we flying near the river. Tonight may be a
good night to look for nighthawks.
