I spent the day birding in Wicomico and Somerset Counties. Top bird
of the day was found by Jim Stasz in a new development called
Plantation Acres off of Old Railroad Rd just south of Rt. 50 in
Wicomico County. Jim found a White-rumped Sandpiper x Dunlin hybrid.
Jim was sitting on the bird when I arrived and we were both able to
get excellent photos (Jim's are much better. Mine are poor
digiscopes). The bird was hanging out in a retention pond with
Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers. The bill of the bird is completely
Dunlin, while the shape of the bird is more White-rumped. In flight
the white tail has a dark stripe running down its length. There was
streaking down the sides like a White-rumped. Jim sent some photos to
Matt Hafner who also believes it is a hybrid. Very cool!!! I'll try
to get my photos on my website in the next couple days.

Other highlights included:

Least Bitterns -- 4 (3 were heard calling spontaneously in the middle
of the day from the Ellis Bay boat ramp parking area. The other was
heard calling from the bridge on Muddy Hole Rd.)
White-rumped Sandpipers -- 2 (observed with a large peep flock in the
eastern most impoundment at Fairmont WMA, Somerset County)
Red-headed Woodpeckers -- 4 (2 pairs observed at two different
locations on Muddy Hole Road)
Sedge Wren -- 1 (calling spontaneously on the northwestern end of the
eastern most impoundment of Fairmont WMA, Somerset County)
Yellow Warblers -- 4 (two pairs on Green Dumpster Rd, Somerset County)
