Subject: [MDOSPREY] Common Eiders in Ocean City--6/28/2010

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday (28 June 2010) Matt Hafner, Mike Burchett, Betsy Bangert, and I birded in the Ocean City area. In addition to the noteworthy weather (hot!), we had a few interesting birds.

Matt started the day right by picking out 4 COMMON EIDERS from the Ocean City Inlet. A new June bird for all of us. The birds were on the Assateague side (and on the bay side) of the inlet. We later drove over to the mainland to get closer and to take a few photos for documentation. Four LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were present on the Assateague beach (scoped from OC Inlet).

We counted 7 BLACK SKIMMERS at Skimmer Island, and Matt picked out a WESTERN WILLET among the many EASTERN WILLETS.

The Assateague OSV Zone was a little disappointing--not much happening on the ocean, and our forays toward bayside didn't produce anything unexpected either. The entire beach is closed a few miles from the entrance to the OSV to protect the nesting plovers, terns, and other species--definitely a good thing even if it does limit our access temporarily.

Later, at one of the Rum Pointe Golf Course Ponds, we found 5 HOODED MERGANSERS. Four were young birds--one of few nesting records for Worcester County.

We kept going until about 4 pm, finishing the day by scanning the skies near Whiton Crossing while listening to Prothonotary Warblers, an American Redstart, and other forest birds.

Have fun,
