On a 4 hour walk from 1000 to 1400, I was happy to be able to discern
some birds with my SongFinder. First, I was greeted by the INDIGO
BUNTING. Then I was serenaded by a TOWHEE. A little later, I was
able to hear a PRAIRIE WARBLER. As I got farther into the woods, I
started to hear quite a few RED-EYED VIREOS. After a bit, I was able
to pick out the song of the YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, followed
by a distant KENTUCKY WARBLER. Then a distant PEWEE chimed
in. After stopping to try spotting a persistent chipping, I caught out of
the corner of my eye a furtive movement overhead: a Black-winged Red-
bird--er, a SCARLET TANAGER!! As I was admiring him thru the bi-
noculars, his lady-bird flew in to pose beside him. That was the high-
light of the day, tho' a few others were noted: ACADIAN FLYCATCHER
a CAROLINA CHICKADEE, a TITMOUSE and CARDINAL. I'm ready
for fall.
