They say third time is a charm, but for me and my wife Debi it took four
tries to spot the BBWD's. But it was worthwhile. What beautiful birds!
The morning light was perfect; we saw them Wednesday July 7 about 7:30 -
8 am.

We parked in the Our Lady of Victory lot and walked to the back of the
school to where a fence separates it from the Charlestown pond. All 5
were sitting on the observation deck. An old guy was fishing; the birds
were unconcerned.

Debi then phoned a friend who lives in Charlestown, she got in the gate,
and the two of them walked down to the pond. The birds were in the water
by then. Debi was able to signal a birder at OLV that the BBWD's were
just below his line of vision, and by waiting, he was able to see them.

We had noted that one bird on the obs deck was lying on the railing with
his head dangling down. I wondered if he was sick. But Debi later noted
that they spend large amounts of time on the water in that same position -
head dangling down feeding underwater, in contrast to mallards, which of
course tip up, butts in the air. Interesting.

The birds have been here for almost a week at least, so they may continue
to hang around for some time.
