Good afternoon all,
This morning I walked around the yard, and stopped when I spotted a bird perched on our fence in the corner. It turned out to be a single, non-vocalizing Grasshopper Sparrow. I watched it for a while then it hopped into our yard, but because it was hidden by a large red oak, I lost sight of it. It disappeared before I could see where it went. Shortly after this, I began to hear a singing Grasshopper Sparrow, from the field beyond our fence. I couldn't tell exactly where it came from (didn't have my hearing aid in) so I was unable to locate it. But it sang incessantly for perhaps 20-30 minutes before I moved on. I walked a bit further along our fenceline, and then spotted a bird hop up from the weeds which seperate our backyard from the neighbors field, on the other side of our fence. It flew up and landed in a low bare branch of a small tree, where I watched it for some time before it flew back down to the edge of the weeds/field. It was a Grasshopper Sparrow (another?), and it held food (looked like a large spider of perhaps a wasp or ant) in its bill. It didn't eat the food, just held it in its bill, then flew back down to the ground. While it was perched there I could hear it softly calling, chipping very quietly while it held the food ( I was only maybe 20 feet from it, hidden by the fence) I am going to search the area this evening to see if there might be a nest there.
