Hello Everyone,

Today's Sunday, July 25th and we just had an adult male Ruby-throated Humming bird just come to our porch, feeding on our sprawling Trumpet Vine (Campsis radians). Normally we seem to only get them during fall migration (mid to late August through September).  My brother-in-law said he saw a tame hummer feeding at the flowers 10 days ago, but I dismissed it since he's not a birder, and we had a lot of those large, green scarab beetles flying around the vines too.  But now - maybe he was right!

We live in eastern Columbia Heights near Howard University - any thoughts if it could be a male resident (we saw the ruby throat patch), or a very early migrant?  We're about a mile from the nearest wooded area (southwest corner of the Old Soldiers' Home golf course).

I bet it's outside of acceptable resident dates for the area, but I'd like to hear any conjecture anyone would like to toss out.

Thanks!

P.S. Gold Finches are also just beginning to come back to our tiny yard for dry Cone flower seed heads!
