Hi all,
Quick update on the birds breeding and/or using our Annapolis/Eastport yard this summer: Carolina wren: fledged 4, Song Sparrow: fledged at least 1, White-breasted Nuthatch: fledged 2, Am. Robin: fledged 2, 1 nest failed, working on second brood, Chimney Swift: had nest in chimney with 5 nestlings - unfortunately the nest fell from the top and none of the nestlings survived, Eu. Starling: fledged several (not sure how many, prob. > 6 in 2 broods), House Sparrow: taken over the purple martin houses in the vicinity and have produced several fledglings, N. Cardinal: fledged at least 1, maybe 2, House Wren: apparently nesting nearby but no evidence of fledglings, Downy Woodpecker: ditto, Gray Catbird: nesting in yard, no fledglings yet, saw one adult with nesting material today, Fish Crow: nesting nearby, no clear evidence of fledglings yet although I suspect there are a couple, Mallards: local pair produced 11 fledglings as of a couple of weeks ago, not sure how many are left. There is also a small colony of Purple Martins that have apparently produced some juveniles down at the Maritime Museum in Eastport.
Lastly, at the Tawes Gardens in Annapolis, I have still been hearing a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks calling from time to time, although rather infrequently as of late. I did see 1 juvenile Red-shouldered about a week and a half ago flying around the Tawes Bldg, which I assume is a product of the nearby nest. Yesterday morning there was a pair of Cooper's Hawks soaring over the Tawes Bldg; I have seen these on and off around Annapolis but have not been able to locate a nest.
Good Birding,
